CHAPTER SIXTEEN

As I stuffed another bite of my breakfast bagel into my mouth, Alitas landed at the entrance to the royal tower. “Forgive me for interrupting when you’re still eating, but the demon has been spotted again, and this time we have a chance of getting wherever he is going before him or at the same time at least.”

I hurried to my feet, considering shoving the last of my bagel in my mouth before I did anything else, but it was too large and there was no way I could finish it in a ladylike manner. Instead, I stood in front of Alitas and didn’t utter a word, too busy chewing.

“It’s somewhere not too far away. I think you’re going to want to fly out and intercept,” he added and again paused, but I was still chewing and trying to think of the best plan of action.

It wasn’t until I had finished that I could speak, and even then I wasn’t sure what to suggest to him. This was a new situation. Although I was used to fighting the demon, I wasn’t used to trying to beat him anywhere.

“I’ll get everyone ready for the interception. And see if Ben knows which artifact this might be.”

The latter disturbed me from my thoughts. We had found all the artifacts close to Detaris already. At least I had thought I had.

“How close is he coming to here?” I asked.

“He’s not heading straight here. Nearer the gate instead,” Alitas reassured me with a pat on the shoulder. It was a relief. For a second I had feared that he was coming here to attack us in Detaris. Not that I thought we couldn’t fight him. The majority of our forces were here and it was by far the strongest dragon city I had seen to both defend and withstand any damage that could be thrown at it.

On top of that, it wasn’t the first time Detaris had been attacked. Many shadow catchers and handlers had tried, and we had repelled them with ease, even before we had created a magic-storing battery or had enough equipment to have everyone using magically enhanced weapons.

With the base on the mainland, human support in the way of the US Military and so many more of us using magic, I didn’t think the demon could be stupid enough to attack Detaris. But his army kept growing somehow, and not once yet had we properly beaten him in a fight. The majority of the time we were the ones to retreat, and in terms of wins, he was way ahead.

The fear that he could overwhelm even our most defensible stronghold was real.

As I put all the artifact pieces back away again, and the book with it, Neritas got our go-bags ready and made sure that the news was spreading through Detaris and out into the populations of dragons nearby who might be able to respond as well.

By the time I flew down to the mainland, where our squad was assembling,
